Design Engineer
Job Description
Summary:
The Design Engineer leads product development projects including researching, analyzing and interpreting data, 2-D drawings, 3-D modeling, creating new designs, prototyping, simulation and testing components and assemblies with a focus on improving fabricated component quality and optimizing manufacturing cost performance.
Responsibilities (include but not limited to):
- Work independently or lead team on multiple development projects understanding design scope, planning, and execution of CAD 3-D model components, including 2-D dimensional drawings with tolerances.
- Manage design elements including project status updates of development project elements for on-time delivery, within scope and within budget.
- Closely collaborate with product design/development team to review and provide feedback on component part designs relating to feasibility, moldability, material selection, quality, financial analysis (VAVE), and justification.
- Create prototype models and samples for development testing and design optimization.
- Closely collaborate with tooling department and manufacturing/operations teams for project completion.
- Assist inspection/quality teams to ensure component parts are inspected properly associated with new tooling.
- Research, understand, analyze and support Engineering Change Order requests.
- Perform systematic design simulation and problem solving with product design/development team.
- Fully understand and utilize industry standards associated with component part development.
- Initiates business cases for new capital equipment and/or more cost-effective component design development methods related to polymers.
- Trains, directs and evaluates designers with emphasis on methods, skill improvement, productivity and troubleshooting related to polymer component design development.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in an Engineering discipline.
- Minimum six (6) years experience with CAD (SOLIDWORKS) design and analysis.
- Minimum four (4) years experience with simulation and analysis (SOLIDWORKS or similar).
- Minimum two (2) years experience with tooling simulation and analysis (Moldflow or similar).
- Strong working knowledge of component part design processes, dimensioning tool usage, drafting, and tolerancing.
- Strong working knowledge of thermoplastic and elastomeric polymers (e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, etc.) used for component fabrication using injection molds and extrusion dies.
- Strong theoretical and working knowledge of mechanical concepts, pneumatics, hydraulics, and equipment design.
- Working knowledge of standard quality control and production floor procedures.
- Proven track record of innovation and developing polymer solutions used with complex tooling for production of high quality, low cost, high volume components.
- Strong working knowledge of lean manufacturing and quality methods: DOE, DFM, DFMEA, 8D, etc.
Desired Qualifications:
- Engineer Intern status (EI or EIT certificate).
- Strong project management, analytical, problem-solving, attention to detail and communication skills.
- Outstanding learning, influencing, teamwork, supervisory, coaching, mentoring and time management skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point, Project, Teams and Planner.
- Work experience with fluid flow products used in irrigation, stormwater, and/or plumbing applications.
- Bilingual – English plus Spanish, Hindi and/or Mandarin Chinese.
